The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen

Finally! This book became available at Fullybooked (my favorite bookstore)  after a long stretch of time bothering them about this request. I first came across The Truth About Forever right here in this blogosphere from two gals, Summer and Erika. When I first virtually met Summer, I remembered our conversation mostly circulated on this book ad how great it is. Erika, on the other hand, has this as an entry on most of her Top 10 Tuesday posts. And so a couple of months later, here I am with hearts on eyes, swooning over Wes.

SYNOPSIS (from Goodreads)A long, hot summer… That’s what Macy has to look forward to while her boyfriend, Jason, is away at Brain Camp. Days will be spent at a boring job in the library, evenings will be filled with vocabulary drills for the SATs, and spare time will be passed with her mother, the two of them sharing a silent grief at the traumatic loss of Macy’s father. But sometimes, unexpected things can happen—things such as the catering job at Wish, with its fun-loving, chaotic crew. Or her sister’s project of renovating the neglected beach house, awakening long-buried memories. Things such as meeting Wes, a boy with a past, a taste for Truth-telling, and an amazing artistic talent, the kind of boy who could turn any girl’s world upside down. As Macy ventures out of her shell, she begins to question her sheltered life.

This is my first time to try a Sarah Dessen book and I have to say I’m definitely picking up another of hers. Her writing style sort of reminded me of Jenny Han’s which is so easy to get into like there’s no actual struggle needed to get properly immersed. Some authors would flaunt their freshly-browsed-from-the-thesaurus vocabulary bank and end up as a reader’s frustration. I like how on Sarah Dessen’s style, there’s no pretense but just transparency on what words and sentence construction she’ll come up with.

Okay, I’d stop before I become so much of a word choice Nazi here and chat about the characters. You can see a variety of personalities in this story and at one point or two, you can relate to their lives’ dramas. Macy was so obsessed at being perfect due to the expectations set by the people around her. She seemed not to have her own identity living behind the shadows of Jason, her jerktastic boyfriend. Wes was a talented sculptor who had a history in a rehabilitation center. My mental picture of him speaks out an image of someone that looks like Dan Humphrey from Gossip Girl, handsome and mysterious. *sigh* *sigh again* Let’s talk about the plot. Macy just came from an unofficial break-up from her boyfriend, Jason, that she went out to give her mind some wandering. She met Wes and the rest of the Wish catering crew and eventually sauntered into new exciting territories she never expected would make her happy. The pacing of the story was a little slow but I liked how the love formula between Macy and Wes were being cooked up in a steady fashion. There’s no love-at-first-sight stuff that happened but more of a crush-at-first-sight thing which, in real life, is more likely to happen. However, the multiple instances when Macy had to literally cease to move and get weakened by Wes’s presence became a pet peeve for me. I get that he’s a striking young lad and boy, was I a victim but being largely and blatantly emphasized he was made him be a little less.

One funny scene. When Bert got his new baby aka ambulance/car, somebody asked if it has a CD player. A CD player?!! Are you kidding me? Having one is like having a precious fossil from the Jurassic period! Well, the CD player is not so long ago but you get the picture. This is the age of selfie and Bluetooth and data stored in microchips. Reading it and recognizing what it was just made me feel so old! Good thing, his car doesn’t have a stereo. Anyway, I would highly recommend this book both for teens and parents. The Truth About Forever touched topics which are extremely visible in a family setting but which the members turn blind about. Parents wanted the best for their kids not knowing that by doing so, they’re ironically giving the opposite. On another note, teens could learn the value of an open interaction with their folks and lessen the trouble or pressure they get into.

When I first laid my eyes on this book, I instantly fell in love with the cover. There’s something about it that emanates both  elegance and simplicity. Probably it’s the minimalist style and the absence of clutter and any element that suggests violence that made it bear such kind of impression. I looked at other book covers of Sarah Dessen’s works and I knew I had to buy them all and marvel at the glory of looking at those cutesy items on my bookshelf. These are the next ones of hers on my reading list:

  1. Just Listen
  2. Saint Anything
  3. Along for the Ride

These are based on Goodreads rating. Have you guys taken on any of Sarah Dessen’s story world? Which ones have gotten you smitten? I appreciate all your recommendations. Til next time!

    • Thank you Josephine! I’m looking forward to that time when you get to it and hopefully, you’ll like it! I actually can’t decide whether I’d go for Nate or Dan in describing the handsome lead on this book because they’re both stunning. But since Dan is more mysterious looking, I went for him 🙂

  1. I’m glad you liked this one, Trisha Ann! The Truth About Forever was my favourite Dessen book too, and I found it to be a pleasant surprise. Unfortunately I haven’t read anything else though.

  2. Totally agree with how annoying it is that Macy got weakened every time Wes was around. Other than that, I think you pick a good Sarah Dessen’s book to start. 🙂
I’ve read most of her books except the last two (Saint Anything and The Moon and More). I like how she writes, but after I read 4 or 5 of hers, it felt more and more formulaic to me which was why I haven’t read her last two books.

I would suggest these books though:
    1. Lock and Key. My favorite Sarah Dessen’s book, mainly because I love the supporting characters.
    2. This Lullaby. Her funniest, lightest (?) one.
    3. Along for The Ride. Probably one of her best, it’s not my favorite of hers, but close.

Honorable mention: Keeping The Moon (aka Last Chance).

    • Wow thanks for those suggestion! I also learned from another book blogger that Sarah Dessen sort of have a pattern in writing her stories so readers no longer get surprised on how her plot progresses. Like Nicholas Sparks or Dan Brown. I’m mostly after a good laugh so I’m probably gonna try This Lullaby. I’ll make sure to find a copy of Lock and Key though because I can’t remember if the bookstore here has a stock of it. Thanks again for this list! 🙂

  3. YES! You’ve picked it up!! 😀 I’m so glad you enjoyed TAF and Wes. 😉 Now you have an understanding why I’m such a fan of Dessen’s books. Something about the simplistic writing is very captivating; I have to agree that there are some slow moments too though. And the characters are fantastically realistic. I’m not a perfectionist in any way but I have friends and family that are, so Macy is a very relatable character I can sympathize with.

I can’t wait to see what you think of Just Listen (another favorite of mine) and Along for the Ride (Auden is my bookish clone and very similar to me in real life).

    • Yes! Now I see why you like this so much. Thanks for introducing me to this! 🙂 I like it mainly bc it’s so easy to get into and there’s a lot about the plot that’s relatable. Ahh this book might be perfect for your family and friends if they haven’t read it yet. Some bloggers and readers say Just Listen is also their favorite. Can’t wait to read it (..and Along for the Ride to know what you mean about you having a similar personality with the character)!

      • You’re so welcome! Welcome to the fandom (is your love for her that intense yet? I guess we’ll see when you read more books)! I’m sure you’ll love Just Listen if you liked TAF. No pressure or anything though, actually maybe you should lessen the excitement that way you won’t be disappointed. I honestly never thought about it that way until you mentioned it (the lessening the hype to enjoy a book more tactic) some other time. XD Anyway, happy reading!

      • Yes! I actually followed some of Sarah Dessen’s social media accounts and checked out her website to see updates and stuff. Like a creepy stalker. Haha! And yeah, it’s true on some books. I’ll heed that advise and read Just Listen with hardly any expectations. But I’m excited now! 🙂

  4. The only Sarah Dessen I’ve read was What Happened to Goodbye and it kind of disappointed me… but I did here that The Truth About Forever is one of her best and you had me at she reminded you of Jenny Han (one of my fav contemps <3) I love that the guy reminded you of Dan cause I love Dan! Surely, I will grab this book soon. Love your review! 🙂

    • This is my first of hers and I’m glad it’s one of her ‘good ones’. If you give this book a try, I hope you’ll like it too. And yes they’re both good although Jenny Han writes more in a teen kind (positive) of way 🙂

  5. I’ve only ever read Just Listen by her. (I kind of missed out her in my high school days – probably because I was too busy re-reading Harry Potter.) She’s on my list to read more of. I have Along for the Ride and this one! I need to get around to them soon. I hope you like Just Listen. I really enjoyed it!
